Bill Lifford, CP

Certified Prosthetist

Bill is an American Board-Certified Prosthetist (certified in 1999) and has cared for patients throughout NYC's five boroughs and Nassau and Suffolk counties. He set out to become a Certified Prosthetist when he realized that he wanted to have a meaningful career in which he helped people. Bill is certified and trained to fit all major prosthetic technologies, including microprocessor-controlled knees and ankles, myoelectric upper limb prostheses, and elevated vacuum socket systems.

Patient advocacy is one of Bill’s passions. Bill is a national leader in appealing prosthetic insurance denials; he believes firmly that it is an amputee’s right to be fitted with the best prosthetic technology that suits their lifestyle, NOT a privilege. Bill has spoken with members of Congress about amputees’ rights and protested against Medicare’s attempts to drastically reduce prosthetic access to amputees. He often speaks about his method of fighting insurance denials at state-and-national-level Orthotic and Prosthetic professional meetings. Bill also regularly teaches classes on prosthetics to physiatry residents, helping train those physicians who provide care to amputees.

When he’s not fighting for amputees’ rights, Bill can be found leading Long Island’s premier blues band, “Harmonica Bill & Marked Deck” – he is the president of the Long Island Blues Society, and his band has competed in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. Bill also loves to ride his bike through the hills of Long Island’s North Shore, but he will admit that he is much slower than he used to be!
